Open/Open-Enabled Pedagogy

A shared workspace for individuals and groups of educators to develop and share open educational resources on OER Commons.

The goal of Open Educational Practice (OEP) is to build the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that support and improve teaching and learning. Using open educational resources (OER) presents unique affordances for educators, as the use of OER is an invitation to adapt, personalize, and add relevancy to materials that inspire and encourage deeper learning in the classroom and across institutions.

We encourage you to explore the professional learning resources and tools gathered here to develop and deepen engagement in open education, and equally as important, please join the Open Education Community of Practice to contribute resources to these important collections.

This toolkit is intended as a guide for students who are engaging in open pedagogy. The toolkit defines open pedagogy, the benefits of open pedagogy, and the rights and responsibilities that come with being a student creator. Instructors may wish to use this toolkit as a resource to scaffold conversations about open pedagogy with their students and to appropriately prepare them for working in the open.

We offer a variety of free online courses on topics ranging from copyright for educators to open science. Our stand-alone courses can be worked through at your own pace at any time, with or without others. Our facilitated courses run for a set period of weeks with an organizer that provides feedback and facilitates discussion.

The SPARC Libraries & OER Forum is a network of academic and research librarians interested in open educational resources (OER) connected through a public e-mail discussion list and monthly calls.

A 30-page toolkit with 16 distinct teaching methods that promote open pedagogy explained. The beginning of the toolkit explains open pedagogy and its relationship to OER. There is a section at the end with additional resources and next steps if faculty want to implement some of these methods.

There are multiple weblinks and examples embedded in the document so that faculty who are interested in a particular method can use those resources for more information and to see examples of how to implement open pedagogy.

Big Ideas Fest convenes all education stakeholders in redesigning the future of education. ISKME's annual event is an extraordinary immersion into collaboration and design that focuses on transformational change in K-20 education.

OER Trainings, delivered individually or as a series.

Around the globe, teachers and educators will receive free training in wiki skills through a series of online and face-to-face workshops. In return, they will become WikiEducators themselves by developing and donating one free content resource back to the WikiEducator community. In other words, L4C participants will "pay" for their training by donating, for example, one lesson or teaching resource back to the project in the spirit of education as a common good for society. Prospective L4C participants are required to sign a learning contract so that we target our efforts in training educators, teachers and trainers who share our vision for free teaching materials.

As part of its mission to educate stakeholders about opportunities for change in scholarly communication, SPARC hosts both regular and periodic meetings, webcasts and other community events.
