Plan Ahead

  • Work within the guidelines of the assignment.
  • Select a topic of interest. Start with dictionaries and encyclopedias. What fascinates you?
  • Choose a subject for which you can find a reasonable amount of information. If you're discovering too much, narrow your topic. If you find too little, broaden your scope.
  • Locate material on your topic.
  • Do a subject search for books with the library catalog. Then try a keyword search, which will probably yield slightly different results.
  • Use library databases to find newspaper and journal articles. This guide provides some suggestions for databases, newspapers and journals that might best meet your needs.
  • Use search engines such as Google Scholar to locate Internet resources.
  • Be sure that your sources are credible, accurate, reasonable and the information is supported by facts and/or figures.
  • Take notes from the information you found and be sure to document all sources; you will need this information to create your bibliography.
  • Organize the research information that you gathered creating an outline then start a rough draft. Revise, edit and polish your paper.
  • Proofread!
