Print Collection - Language and Literature

The James P. Adams Library organizes its print collection according to the Library of Congress Classification (LOC) system. The LOC system groups books and other library materials by subject, enabling researchers to browse the library shelves for works on a specific topic.

LOC call numbers begin with letters of the alphabet. The letter "P" at the beginning of a call number indicates that the subject of the work is either language or literature. For example, the call number PS1868 .A2 belongs to The Scarlet Letter

The letters also serve as a location code, leading the researcher to the physical location of materials on a topic. For example, the call number PS1868 .N38 2007 will lead you to a volume of critical essays on The Scarlet Letter, shelved on Level 3 of the library next to the novel.
