Friends of the Adams Library First Year Research Prize

2024 Winner

The Library Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that Nicole P. Nunes has been awarded the 2024 Friends of the Adams Library First Year Research Prize.

 

Nicole Nunes is the author of “Childhood Trauma and its Effects on Children,” a research paper that she produced in PSYC 110H with Professor Jayson Spas. The selection committee described Nicole's paper as demonstrating an excellent description and synthesis of current Psychology research on an important, complex topic.

 

Reception:

A reception in Nicole's honor will be held in the Adams Library Reinhardt Room from 3PM to 4PM on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. Please join us in celebrating Nicole Nunes!

2023 Winners

The Library Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that Miguel Hoyos and Orli Juarez have been awarded the 2023 Friends of the Adams Library First Year Research Prize.

 

Miguel Hoyos is the author of "Supporting First-Generation College Students," a research paper completed in ENGL 100 with Professor Sarah Hesson. The selection committee was impressed by how Hoyos used local information and data to build a compelling case for broadening support for first-generation students at Rhode Island College and beyond. Members of the committee described the paper as engaging, informative, and solutions-oriented.

 

Orli Juarez is the author of “Insomnia: A Sleep-Stealing Disorder,” a research paper completed in PSYC 110H with Professor Jayson Spas. The selection committee described the paper as demonstrating an excellent synthesis of current literature from a variety of publication types in Psychology. Members of the committee described Juarez's literature review as having more zest, readability, and organizational purpose than they usually see at the first-year level.

A reception in their honor will be held in the Adams Library Reinhardt Room from 12PM to 1PM on Wednesday, April 19, 2023. Please join us in celebrating Miguel Hoyos and Orli Juarez for their achievements as researchers!

2022 Winners

The Library Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that Josephine Johnson and Ayden Mudd have been awarded the 2022 Friends of the Adams Library First Year Research Prize. 

 

Josephine Johnson and Ayden Mudd are the authors of "Nanoparticles as a Means of Inflammatory Arthritis Medication Delivery," an outstanding collaborative presentation that provides clear and engaging explanations of laboratory research, undertaken with Dr. Jamie Towle-Weicksel (Associate Professor of Chemistry), to advance the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The committee also cited Johnson and Mudd's superior choice of secondary literature to frame the research problem as a determining factor in their award.

 

A reception in their honor will be held at 4pm on Thursday, April 21, 2022, in the Library's Reinhardt Room. Please join us in celebrating Josephine Johnson and Ayden Mudd for a (research) job well done! 

2021 Winners

On behalf of the prize committee, we are writing to announce the winners of the Friends of the Adams Library First Year Research Prize:

 

Alexander Tum - Nominated by Professor Kathryn Kalinak for his project, “Penguin Films and the Environment: The Triumph of Happy Feet and the Trouble with March of the Penguins,” which demonstrated exceptional choice and use of secondary literature to advance an original argument on the important subject of climate change.

 

Ashley Mariani - For her project, “The Mass Incarceration of Black Women,” which demonstrated excellent gathering and synthesis of information sources pertaining to the critical topic of systemic racism in the US. Her project was produced for Professor Erik Christiansen's Honors first year seminar.
