Locating Books in Adams Library

If the record for a book indicates it is AVAILABLE you can locate the book in the circulating collection of the Library. Not sure where it is?  Check the Library Floor Map by the call number you see in the Library Catalog (i.e.DS62.8.M36 2009 ).

Books in world history (not the United States or Canada) will generally have call numbers beginning with "D."   Many of the books dealing with historical aspects of European states and societies are classified in the Ds.  However, countries discussed in the context of foreign relations with another country or countries may be classified elsewhere (i.e. E = American history).  See also areas such as BP for Islam as a religious element or pan-national Islamic influence.

Library Catalogs

Some search tips for use in the Library Catalog:

if you know the author and title of a work, chose a Title search; it will typically find the item more quickly than an Author search.

The standard Library of Congress subject heading [LCSH] for The Great War is: World War, 1914-1918

War may be thought of as foreign relations gone very bad.  So consider these headings:

<Name of Country> -- Foreign Relations-- <date range that includes any part of 1914-1918>, i.e. Great Britain--Foreign Relations 1910-1936

OR

<Name of Country>--Foreign Relations--<Name of Another Country>, i.e. Germany--Foreign Relations--Great Britain

War is also history: military, social, political, cultural, etc.  So consider these headings:

<Name of Country>--History--<date range that includes any part of 1914-1918>, i.e. France--History--1914-1940

OR

<Name of Country>--Social Conditions--<date range that includes any part of 1914-1918>, i.e. Russia -- Social Conditions -- 1801-1917

OR  these standard subject subdivision in place of History or Social Conditions:

Civilization

Economic Conditions

Politics and Government

The main subject heading World War, 1914 - 1918 is subdivided by a great variety of subheadings beyond the typical battle and place names. These subdivision can be added to your search as another way of refining it.  For example:

World War, 1914-1918  (along with the subdivision)  Art and the war  , or Literature and the War, or Mass Media and the War, or Motion Pictures and the War, or Music and the War, or Poetry, or Theater and the War

World War, 1914 - 1918 and Personal Narratives (this subheading includes diaries, memoirs, and autobiographical accounts)

World War, 1914 - 1918 and Caricatures and cartoons, or Humor

The role of organized religion or religious beliefs might surface with such subheadings as Religious Aspects, or Catholic Church, Church of England, or Chaplains, or Conscientious Objectors

The idea of opposition might be explored using Draft Resistors, or Protest Movements, or - more broadly - Public Opinion

The subheading Prisoners and Prisons applies to both POWs and to internment of internal civilians

Headings may also cover specific events, such as:

Armenian massacres, 1915-1923

OR broader topics:

Genocide--Turkey
