Using Books for Research

RIC provides immediate access to thousands of physical and electronic books, but for physical books that RIC doesn't own, you can submit a request through interlibrary loan.

For more information about finding physical books within the Adams Library, please see:

Photography Books by Library of Congress Call Number

If you would like to browse the physical shelves at the library, photography books will primarily be classified within Library of Congress subclass TR, though photography certainly appears in other disciplines as well.

Call Number Subject
TR1-1050 Photography
TR250-265 Cameras
TR287-500 Photographic processing. Darkroom technique
TR504-508 Transparencies. Diapositives
TR510-545 Color photography
TR550-581 Studio and laboratory
TR590-620 Lighting
TR624-835 Applied photography: Including artistic, commercial, medical photography, photocopying processes
TR845-899 Cinematography. Motion pictures
TR925-1050 Photomechanical processes

Because photography spans multiple disciplines, it may be helpful to search for books within other subclasses as well. If you are familiar with the Library of Congress Classification Outline and you know the Subclass to which your subject belongs, you can certainly browse the shelves, but you can also search within the catalog using call numbers.

For instance, to search for photography books held within the RIC Library classified within "arts in general" (Library of Congress Subclass NX) you could search the catalog for: kw:(photography) AND nu:(nx*)

You can either type out the search string as above, or you can use the advanced search to break your search into individual parts.
