About Citations

There are several reasons why we cite our sources:

  • Giving credit to researchers and acknowledging their ideas is ethical behavior.
  • Showing your reader that you've done your research. Be proud!
  • Making it easy for readers to track down your sources if they want to consult them.
  • Avoiding plagiarism.

To cite a source you will create an entry for your Works Cited list. This entry, or citation, is made up of common elements that provide your readers with the information they need to track down your sources.

The common elements are:

  • Author(s)
  • Title of source
  • Title of container
  • Other contributors (for books)
  • Number (such as volume and issue numbers for articles)
  • Publisher (for books)
  • Publication date
  • Page numbers
  • DOI or URL

This is an example of how an eJournal works-cited entry might look in the MLA 8th Edition style:
