Electronic Reference Sources

The clearer a concept is in your mind, the more productive and efficient your search for information will be.  Consider using reference sources, particularly specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries, to obtain definitions and descriptions for clarity.  These works may also reveal complimentary or conflicting aspects of a concept when it is used in different contexts.

CredoCredo text

Credo Reference brings together over 600 reference works from more than 80 publishers, including dozens of university press publications.  This breadth of coverage will allow you to discover discussions of sports and gaming-related terms or concepts, written from the point of view of a wide variety of fields, not just mathematics or statistics. Note that many of these background definitions and discussions also include links to further information from books in the Adams Library Catalog, as well as journals articles and websites chosen by the Credo editors.

Library Catalog (including HELIN)

The book whose Library Catalog records is reproduced below did not appear in the results for the first, or even the third, search.  A combination of  carefully reading the catalog itself to discover additional strategies & terms and brainstorming for synonyms and terms related to the ideas and concepts with which you started is necessary for getting beyond "ok" and into "on target" sources.

Reading the DESCRIPTION section of this catalog record shows us a set of terms and subject phrases assigned to this book when it was catalogued (ignore those not in English, as well as most of the very broad, single word terms).  Other books focused on any of these same ideas will have been assigned some of the same Subject Headings.  So "reading" the catalog record in detail can be an effective way to expand your search from its initial starting point, in this case "sports records", by noting and using the Subjects assigned to the books and documents in your result list as additional useful terms.  Because the Subjects are live links in the Library Catalog, you can directly generate a new search for additional material using these new terms or concepts.  In the example above, "Sports Records, Psychological aspects" forms one focus of this book, but it also focuses on the parallel idea of "Sports, Physiological aspects" as well.

Though you should be "reading" the catalog records for the phrase "Held by RIC Adams Library" for material available here, you can easily "REQUEST Item" from other libraries via InterLibrary Loan.   Turn-around time for material "Held by HELIN Libraries" or "Held by Rhode Island libraries" is about 2 - 5 working days.
